ACLU drops death penalty appeal

The AP is reporting that the ACLU and the attorney general's office have voluntarily dropped a state Supreme Court case challenging Nevada's use of lethal injection to execute inmates.

With the U.S. Supreme Court essentially confirming lethal injection as an acceptable means of administering the death penalty, attorneys felt the case would no longer benefit their client.

Board votes to grant domestic partner benefits

In domestic partner news, the board of the Nevada Public Employees Benefits Program has voted to expand coverage to unmarried couples and their dependents. Cue screams from the right wing, please.

The measure includes both same-and opposite-sex couples who live together, and still needs the final approval of the legislature. The plan will be submitted to Gov. Jim Gibbons for the 2009-11 budget.
