Polls are open

Today is the primary election, and the polls are open.

Will former Assemblywoman Sharron Angle (R-Reno) unseat legendary state Senate Majority Leader Bill Raggio (R-Reno)? Who will emerge victorious in the messy GOP primary in AD-2? Will Brian Scroggins defeat now-ineligible Clark County Commissioner Bruce Woodbury and force a vote of the county GOP central committee to decide the nominee?

Stay tuned.

Today's must-read

David McGrath Schwartz has a must-read story in today's Las Vegas Sun on veteran state Sen. Bill Raggio's (R-Reno) fight for his political life:

You spend three decades in the state Senate, you have a bust in bronze at the Reno airport, and yet you face the real possibility of ending your public service defeated in your party’s primary.

Turnout could be the deciding factor. Conventional wisdom gives Raggio the advantage in a high-turnout election. But low turnout could give his opponent, former Assemblywoman Sharron Angle (R-Reno), an edge. Republican turnout in Waschoe County was 37.9 percent in the 2006 primary.

Tax cap petition moves forward

Former Assemblywoman Sharron Angle: Campaign photoFormer Assemblywoman Sharron Angle: Campaign photoThe so-called tax cap ballot initiative — which would limit property taxes to 1 percent of a property's 2003-2004 value and curb increases at 2 percent or the rate of inflation — moved a step closer to the November ballot, The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported Tuesday.

According to the paper, Secretary of State Ross Miller directed the state's 17 county clerks and registrars to begin verifying the 83,600 signatures submitted by the initiative's backers.

The group needs 58,628 valid signatures from registered voters — including a sufficient number from each county — to advance the initiative to the ballot, the Review-Journal reported.

The Property Tax Reform Initiative for Nevada has been a pet concern of state Senate candidate and former Assemblywoman Sharron Angle.

Angle has been actively seeking a cap on property taxes for four years. She's running for a seat in the state Senate in the Aug. 12 Republican primary.

Buckley, Raggio, Woodbury off the ballot?

Clark County Commissioner Brian Scroggins? Senator Sharron Angle? Assemblyman Kevin Child? The race for all three candidates may get a boost today as the Nevada Supreme Court continues to hear arguments in the term limit cases.

Potentially at risk are Clark County Commissioner Bruce Woodbury, state Senate Majority Leader Bill Raggio and Assembly Speaker Barbara Buckley. Many others originally elected at the same time could be caught up in a sweeping purge if the court rules a strict adherance to the 12-year intent of the term limit initiative.

Filing Fallout

This year ended with more of a bang than a whimper. Joseph Cooper has the races to watch here.

Getting a freebie this year are Democrat Valerie Wiener, and Republicans Dean Rhoads and Mike McGinness. All have safe seats.

In CD-1, Shelley Berkley may just pull this one off. With a spare 60,000 voter registration advantage you would think that she is safe, but the race still managed to attract seven GOP opponents. Seven. Must be the huge Republican surge that we're seeing nationwide that makes these guys think they have a chance with those odds.

Angle mulls challenging Heller

Former Republican Assemblywoman Sharron Angle.Former Republican Assemblywoman Sharron Angle.Las Vegas- Former Republican Assemblywoman Sharron Angle is contemplating another run for the 2nd district congressional seat currently occupied by Rep. Dean Heller.  Angle, who currently chairs “We the People Nevada,” a state political action committee dedicated to setting a new property tax cap, may wait until as late as May to make a final decision.

A run by Angle could pose a serious risk to Heller as she has proven both broad appeal in the district and impressive fundraising prowess.  In 2006 Angle lost the Republican primary to Heller by only 421 votes in a heated three-way race that included now-Nevada First Lady Dawn Gibbons.  Angle was also able to match Heller in fundraising that year—both barely broke the 800K mark in pre-primary dollars.
