Las Vegas Sun: Assembly candidate omits party affiliation in campaign materials

The Las Vegas Sun ran a story in Monday's paper profiling Sean Fellows, a Republican running for state assembly against April Mastroluca in District 29.

According to the Sun, Fellows doesn't mention his party affiliation in any of his campaign materials, and he brings it up only when asked during door-to-door campaigning.

The paper's story says Fellows is hoping to sidestep the issue of partisanship in an attempt to target Democrats and other voters who are down on Republicans because of the unpopular policies of the Bush administration.

Analysis: Does Breeden stand a chance in SD-5?

Politicker Photo.LAS VEGAS-Months ago, intent on retaking the state senate, Nevada Democrats cast their sights on Senate District 5 as one of two key targets. But hopes of capturing the seat may be fading as their candidate, a self-described "political unknown," has failed to win the endorsement of one of the pillars of the state Democratic establishment, the Nevada State Education Association.

And the endorsement of incumbent state Sen. Joe Heck (R-Henderson) by the state's teachers' union is just the latest in a series of missed opportunities for state Democrats that have led some Democratic operatives to believe their candidate, Shirley Breeden, is unlikely to defeat Heck.

Although it was a windy evening, more than a hundred voters and activists attended the event, picking up "Bob Beers for Senate" t-shirts and learning which candidates are worth contributing to.

"Pretty darn good turnout," said Beers, who recruited several volunteers at the event. Beers is being challenged this year by Democrat Allison Copening in his Senate District 6, which is expected to be one of the closest contested of the season.

Eight assembly candidates, one of them challenging a Republican incumbent, two family court judicial candidates, two district court judicial candidates, one Supreme Court candidate, one Clark County Commission candidate and one congressional candidate rounded out the field at the event.

    PolitickerNV Profile: Monica Moradkhan

Monica Moradkhan, executive director of the Republican Assembly Caucus.: Politicker Photo.Monica Moradkhan, executive director of the Republican Assembly Caucus.: Politicker Photo.Periodically, PolitickerNV.com will be profiling one of the staffers and consultants who work so hard to get these guys and gals elected and us something to write about. Today's subject: Monica Moradkhan, executive director of the Republican Assembly Caucus.

LAS VEGAS -- If Democrats fail to reach the veto-proof majority in the Assembly they've been craving for years, a good bit of the credit for it will belong to Monica Moradkhan. Moradkhan has served as executive director of the Republican Assembly Caucus since 2006, an unlikely vocation for the onetime UNLV hotel administration major.

"I've always had an interest in politics," said Moradkhan, 28. "It started in high school when I was on the student council and student body president."

    The $100,000 Man

There's a right way and a boring way to make your filing for office a press announcement.

The boring way is that you go down to the elections department and bring your friends or the family pooch and hope someone thinks that it is a Hallmark moment.

The right way is to file for office and announce that as a new candidate you out-raised an incumbent who then dropped out of the race, have been walking your neighborhood for months and then topped the $100,000 mark in money raised before the first day of filing.

To see the right way to do things, look to AD 29 star candidate Sean Fellows.
