Pan-Dem-onium! The 2008 Clark County Democratic Convention

The Bally's ballroom, site of the 2008 Clark County Democratic ConvetionThe Bally's ballroom, site of the 2008 Clark County Democratic ConvetionLas Vegas- “Clown shoes” was how one delegate to the Clark County Democratic Convention described the scene Saturday, echoing the thoughts and words of many in the packed-beyond-overflow ballroom of Bally’s Hotel and Casino.

Trouble started before the convention even began as thousands of people waited in line for hours to be granted entrance to the ballroom.  The capacity of the room was only 5,000, according to a Bally’s spokesperson, but more than 7,400 delegates had been elected from the precinct caucuses last month, not counting alternates.  A fire marshal threatened to shut the event down only minutes after it officially began and when the doors were shut to all comers, hundreds of people still remained outside.

Covering Clinton and the Caucus, the Circus Comes to Town

Swamped by press, N.Y. Sen. Hillary Clinton campaigns in a north Las Vegas neighborhood.Swamped by press, N.Y. Sen. Hillary Clinton campaigns in a north Las Vegas neighborhood. If the reception awaiting N.Y. Sen. Hillary Clinton on her Thursday evening “canvas” was any indication, swarms of television cameras and reporters will be a much more frequent sight in Nevada in the coming days, and not just on days that O.J. is set to be deposed.

The satellite trucks’ antennas were already tilting in the breeze an hour before Clinton arrived at 22nd St. and Brady in northern Las Vegas.  The local network affiliates, NBC’s KVBC-3, Fox’s KVVU-5, CBS’ KLAS-8, ABC’s KTNV-13 and Vegas PBS, arrived early, setting their cameras up for ideal shots only to have to move them when Clinton arrived in a different part of the neighborhood.  Besides the local television, HD News and network ABC also awaited Clinton, to be joined by counterparts from CNN, FoxNews, MSNBC, AP TV, and network CBS and FOX when the traveling press bus arrived.  Clinton, unlike less well-financed or nationally-prominent candidates, has a pool of press that travel with her from event to event and state to state.

Hillary Clinton "canvasses" Las Vegas neighborhood Part 3

In this video, Sen. Clinton continues her walk through a northern Las Vegas neighborhood with Assemblyman Ruben Kihuen.

Due to the large number of press covering the "canvas," reporters' access to Clinton was highly-limited, as can be shown by the feverish look on Jon Ralston's face as he waits to be recognized.

Hillary Clinton "canvasses" Las Vegas neighborhood Part 2

In this video, N.Y. Sen. Hillary Clinton urges Las Vegas residents to caucus for her Jan. 19.

Clinton campaigned today in Assembly District 11, the heavily-Hispanic neighborhood represented by Ruben Kihuen.  Kihuen can be heard from the right of the video campaigning in both English and Spanish.

The packets Clinton is distributing contained an "América con Hillary" button and bumper sticker, a DVD in both English and Spanish that highlights Clinton's commitment to Hispanic issues and literature in both languages giving information about Clinton and the Jan. 19 caucus.

As you will note, reporters, cameramen, photographers, staff, security and even lowly internet journalists far outnumber potential voters.

What will winning “Kihuen Primary” mean for Clinton?

Nev. Ass. Ruben Kihuen endorses Hillary Clinton at Rancho High School in Las Vegas SaturdayNev. Ass. Ruben Kihuen endorses Hillary Clinton at Rancho High School in Las Vegas Saturday

Sen. Hillary Clinton personally received Nevada Assemblyman Ruben Kihuen’s (D-Clark) endorsement for the presidency Saturday, ending a whirlwind courtship that included two visits to the assemblyman’s overwhelmingly Hispanic district in northern Las Vegas.

Picking up Kihuen’s endorsement was widely regarded as a coup for the Clinton campaign, as the assemblyman had received multiple personal visits from other candidates including Sen. Barack Obama, Sen. Chris Dodd, Gov. Bill Richardson and former Sen. John Edwards.  Now that Kihuen’s on board with the Clinton campaign, what will it mean for the upcoming Jan. 19 caucus?
