ACORN offices in Las Vegas raided

The Associated Press is reporting that Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, also also called ACORN, had their offices raided today by agents of Nevada Secretary of State Ross Miller.  The story reports that investigators are looking for evidence of voter registration fraud.

Jon Ralston has a follow up on his blog that shows ACORN hiring ex-convicts, including those with expertise in identity theft.

Early voting sites open on Nevada Day

Secretary of State Ross Miller (D-Las Vegas) is looking out for your access to the polls.  So no day off for poll workers on Nevada Day.

It might be excessive to say that voter access is compromised by closing down on Nevada Day.  This is probably a simple cautionary measure. Miller can't afford even a hint of vulnerability when he is gearing up for a gubernatorial primary against Clark County Commissioner Rory Reid (D-Las Vegas).

    OPINION

    Miller making gubernatorial waves

Secretary of State Ross Miller (D) has been increasingly letting potential donors know that he is likely to enter the race for governor, according to sources in Washington.

That would be a gutsy move that would set up a contentious primary and could be seen as taking on the Reid machine, considering it's widely expected that Clark County Commission Chairman Rory Reid (D-Henderson) will make a gubernatorial run himself at the same time that his father U.S. Sen. Harry Reid (D-Searchlight) runs for re-election.

Teachers try to boot Angle petition

Jon Ralston and his omnipresence are back from vacation, and he already has the scoop on the Nevada State Education Association complaint filed late Friday with the Secretary of State. The complaint aims to disqualify the Sharon Angle-backed property tax initiative.

    For the lazy:

The complaint centers around "(1) numerous intances where the circulator never executed the required affidavit; and (2) instances where the affidavit was executed improperly." The complaint cointinues on with specific examples of mistakes made in the signature gathering process, the specific Nevada law governing the signature gathering process, and Nevada Supreme Court cases on the subject for precedent.

State Supreme Court to hear term limits cases

The Nevada Supreme Court today announced that they will take up the term limits issue in a "triage session" on June 13th. The underlying issues that led to the filing of the cases will not be argued except to help the court determine how to proceed.

The case management session will follow three oral arguments before the full court the morning of June 13. Two deal with terms of office for elected officials and the third will address whether candidates for District Court judgeships must reside in the judicial district where they are seeking the bench.
