Robert List

Only three incumbent Governors have lost re-election since Jewett Adams lost in 1886 -- Bob List was one of them

Robert List was part of a group of young prosecutors who once played a major role in Nevada politics. List's rise in politics was meteoric: he was 31-years-old when he was elected Ormsby County District Attorney in 1966 (a post Paul Laxalt held in the 1950's), and was elected state Attorney General four years later.

List, at 42, won election as Governor in 1978. He won 82% in the GOP primary, and defeated Democrat Robert Rose (who became Lieutenant Governor when Harry Reid ran against Laxalt for the U.S. Senate in 1974) by a 56%-40% margin.

Back-to-back GOP fundraisers planned

It will be a busy week for the GOP fundraising machine after filing for office closes next month.

The GOP Senate Caucus has just sent out a 'save the date' e-mail for a May 21 event to be hosted in Reno.  The host committee includes Governor Jim Gibbons and all five former governors, including two Democrats.

Subtle message here:  Raggio is coming back.

Who gets the credit for the GOP winner?

With GOP presidential candidates largely ignoring the Nevada presidential caucus on Saturday -- Ron Paul is the only Republican scheduled to be in the state this week -- the contest may offer some evidence as to the value of endorsements in a race that may be wide open. Here's a list of our GOP stakeholders, along with their percentage in the Reno Gazette-Journal poll - which suggests the possibility of a four-way contest on the Republican side:

Does List help Rudy as much as Porter?

Molly Ball said just about everything that needed to be said regarding former Governor Bob List's endorsement of Rudy Giuliani.  He is a former one-term Governor from ages ago who supports Yucca now.  None of this really hurts Giuliani, but does it help?

Honestly, the early Rudy endorsement by Congressman Jon Porter is far more valuable.  He's in office now, he's in a politically embattled district split evenly between Democrats and Republicans, and he is solidly against Yucca.

Speaking of endorsements

Where does Governor Jim Gibbons stand in the Republican presidential contest? For that matter, neither have to respected Nevadans who served as both Governor and U.S. Senator: Democrat Richard Bryan and Republican Paul Laxalt.

If former Governor Bob List doesn't help Rudy Giuliani much, would Gibbons? Could a Gibbons endorsement help anyone? If it were me, I'd get on someone's ship and use it for all I could, but one has to wonder whether maybe no one wants his help right now.

List backs Giuliani

Former Gov. Robert List has endorsed Rudy Giuliani for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination. From the Review-Journal's Molly Ball: "List is also something of a political pariah in Nevada because he has lobbied for the nuclear power industry in favor of the proposed nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain, which the state officially opposes, as do most residents." Ball said that the Giuliani campaign didn't "return a phone call seeking comment on List's association with Yucca."
