Jon Porter's (R-Boulder City) Henderson field office Monday morning in response to Porter's claims that he would submit gasoline receipts from voters in his district to U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

The state Democrats said 30 people gathered outside of Porter's
office to present the three-term representative with a mock receipt for the $210,000 in campaign donations Porter has reportedly received from oil companies and affiliated groups.

After the rally, Nevada's Democratic Party released a statement on its website, calling Porter to task for what they called a pro-oil voting record.

Reid to endorse by end of week

LAS VEGAS-Speaking to reporters in Washington D.C. today, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said that he would endorse one of the Democratic candidates for president by the end of this week.

Reid has kept to a pledge of neutrality he made before the Nevada Caucuses in January.  He has said repeatedly that he, along with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, would urge all remaining uncommitted superdelegates to commit to a candidate following the final nominating contests in Montana and South Dakota.

Voting in those contests is scheduled to conclude at 7 p.m. PDT tonight.

Berkley splits with Clinton over 'gas tax holiday'

LAS VEGAS-Although she continues to support N.Y. Sen. Hillary Clinton for her party's nomination for president, Rep. Shelley Berkley (D-Nev.) disagrees with one of Clinton's most publicized policy proposals of recent weeks, the "gas tax holiday."

"I am opposed to the gas tax holiday, having sat on the Transportation Committee and knowing of the infrastructure needs of this country and the condition of our roads," said Berkley.

"In Nevada, we are at least $3.5 billion, possibly $5 billion short of satisfying our current and future infrastructure needs.  To have a gas holiday that will take money out of the highway fund, which designates money for specific highway projects will be very counterproductive."

"As supportive as I am of Sen. Clinton and as much of an admirer as I am of her, I disagreed with that position."

Derby to challenge Heller in CD2

Carson City- Jill Derby resigned as Nevada Democratic chairwoman today and shortly afterward announced that she would again seek the 2nd Congressional District seat currently held by Republican Dean Heller.

“My allegiance lies with those Nevadans,” said Derby, “Democrat, Republican, and Independent who know that we can do better, and who are disappointed in the politicians who have lost sight of our values. It’s time to move past the same Washington politics that leaves Nevada families behind.”

Congressman Jon Porter in Sun City Anthem Saturday.Congressman Jon Porter in Sun City Anthem Saturday.Congressman Jon Porter headlined a caucus-training event for residents of Sun City Anthem Saturday, the Las Vegas area’s second-largest age-restricted community.  Porter spoke for about an hour before the training began and used the time to both defend his record and attack the record of “the Pelosi Congress.”

“There’s only eleven percent support for the Nancy Pelosi Congress,” said Porter.  “Doesn’t surprise me, when all we’re doing is renaming post offices.  What are we accomplishing?  Nothing.”

Why the Next Democratic Era May Be Different

Let’s start by stipulating the obvious: A Republican, particularly one named Rudolph, could wind up winning next year’s presidential race, denying Democrats simultaneous control of the White House and Congress at least through 2012.

But let’s say that doesn’t happen. Let’s suppose that, for the first time since the Republican tidal wave of 1994, Democrats end up next year with total control of the federal government.

It’s not an unlikely prospect.
