Are Nevada's U.S. senators interested in being vice president?

Don't expect Nevada's U.S. senators to be a presidential runningmate. In a survey of the U.S. Senate's membership not already running for president on whether they'd accept an offer to be vice president, The Hill newspaper found a variety of responses to the veepstakes question. Some were accompanied by laughs, others took the question seriously.

So, how did Democrat Harry Reid and Republican John Ensign respond?

Reid on The Daily Show

LAS VEGAS-For anyone who missed it, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid was on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart last night, plugging his new book, The Good Fight. Reid was unsurprisingly soft-spoken, as noted by Stewart, and revealed a little of his motives for writing the autobiography.

"I tried in the book to let the people of Nevada, since I was born there, went away to high school, to college, law school, practiced law, went into public service, about two and a half million people have moved to that sparsely populated state," said Reid. "They don't know who I am. They see little snippets about me on TV, on radio, on newspaper, people don't know who I am. I thought it was important to tell a story about really who I am and that in America if I can make it, anyone can."

Reid & Reid '10

Can Clark County Commission Chairman Rory Reid run for Governor in 2010 if his father runs for re-election? Some pundits say that Reid, widely viewed as a rising star in Democratic politics, would be at a disadvantage if he tries to share the statewide ballot with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who has been struggling to increase his job approval ratings among voters in his home state.

Risk vs. Reward

Democrats are taking a bit of a risk in their bids to oust Dean Heller and Jon Porter from their seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.  If Heller and Porter win, they could find their political careers strengthened through their victories in tough races – something that could propel them in to the 2010 U.S. Senate race against Majority Leader Harry Reid.  Of course, if Heller and Porter lose, the marquis Republican challengers are gone.

NV superdelegates stay the course, reflect on Dem primary

LAS VEGAS-The Pennsylvania Primary, hailed for seven weeks as a make-or-break contest in the ongoing Democratic nomination process, appears to have changed little, either nationally or here in Nevada.

With N.Y. Sen. Hillary Clinton lagging in pledged delegates, many analysts believe the only way she can secure the Democratic nomination is to convince superdelegates that Ill. Sen. Barack Obama is unelectable.  Her win in Pennsylvania, although it may have produced a net gain of 12 pledged delegates, does not appeare to have changed any Nevada superdelegates' minds, however.

Carpenters’ Union debunks Martin claims about Daskas

LAS VEGAS- Andrew Martin's congressional campaign continued its attempts to take down Robert Daskas this weekend with a new press release titled "ANDREW MARTIN IS THE ONLY CANDIDATE WHO CAN DEFEAT JON PORTER."  The people mentioned in the release question its accuracy, however.

The harshly worded release alleges that Daskas, the Democrat in the race who has received the support of much of Nevada's Democratic establishment, is "beholden to the Washington DC special interests" and makes disparaging claims about Daskas' performance at a Carpenters' Union endorsement meeting more than a week ago.

"In a recent meeting with the Carpenters Union, Mr. Daskas arrived over 20 minutes late and continued to ask his campaign manager for answers, question after question, during the endorsement meeting," said Martin spokesperson Vin Gopal in the release.  "If Mr. Daskas does not have the knowledge to answer questions in an endorsement meeting, how will he be able to go toe to toe with Mr. Porter during a debate?"

The Carpenters' Union's Nevada political director, Jim Sala, took issue with that characterization of Daskas' performance today, describing that portion of Martin's press release as "funny" and giving a quite different version of the events.
