Dawn wants rent-a-cops

First Lady Dawn Gibbons wants Gov. Jim Gibbons (R-Sparks) to pay for private security for her in the times that she no longer has security that is funded by the public.  The Governor reduced her security detail along with his own as part of the budget cut process.  Both the first lady and the Governor now drive themselves to personal appointments.

Driving Ms. Dawn

First lady Dawn Gibbons is losing her security detail.  Mostly.  (It's the budget cuts, stupid.)

The Associated Press is reporting that she will still have security at functions where she is acting in her official capacity as first lady.  Gibbons press secretary Ben Kieckhefer said "But for other things, like going to the gym or to her mother's house, she doesn't need security protection for that."

Or on dates, I'm guessing.  Get the full story here.

Dems say Gibbons trying to ‘wag the dog’ with special session

Assemblyman David Bobzien (D-Reno).Assemblyman David Bobzien (D-Reno).LAS VEGAS - While some are reluctant to characterize Republican Gov. Jim Gibbons' motives behind calling a special session of the Nevada legislature Friday, some Democratic legislators believe Gibbons is only calling it to distract media attention from bad publicity surrounding his divorce.

Gibbons' divorce from first lady Dawn Gibbons has made national press recently with stories of an alleged mistress and Gibbons' text messages to her filling headlines.  Gibbons apologized Wednesday for using a state-owned cell phone to send more than 860 text messages in one month last year to the alleged mistress.

RGJ obtains Gibbons’ cell phone, text message records

LAS VEGAS-Annjeanette Damon of the Reno Gazette-Journal is reporting that Gov. Jim Gibbons used his state-owned cell phone to send more than 850 text messages in one month last year to the woman with whom he has been accused of having an affair.

Gibbons, whose divorce proceedings with Nevada First Lady Dawn Gibbons were put on hold yesterday, has denied having an affair with the recipient of the text messages, Kathy Karrasch, the estranged wife of a Reno-based doctor.

Gibbons vs. Gibbons continues

For the latest salvo in the Gibbons vs. Gibbons saga, the locals have solid coverage.

For the lazy: the political dismemberment by divorce continues in slow-mo for all of us to watch with both horror and fascination.

Mrs. Gibbons made claims that the Governor is very, very bad, and that this is all about some marital intruder who is the estranged wife of a local doctor. Ouch.

This political train wreck should continue at the current pace of 2 miles per hour over the course of the next six months.

The wrath of a woman scorned, indeed.

Gibbons divorce sealed

Judge Bill Maddox has sealed the Gibbons divorce case as of this morning.  It was the right decision.

This one will be enough of a media circus as it is with the questions of who has the statutory right to live in the mansion, and Dawn Gibbons' attorney will no doubt leverage the high profile nature of the case to his client's advantage.

Will Gibbons run again?

One thing you can take to the bank: the pending divorce between Dawn and Jim Gibbons is not going to be warm and fuzzy, and Nevadans are in for quite a theatrical event over the next few months.  There is lots of speculation going on these days, but one possibility that insiders from both parties seem to agree on is that the divorce could mean that Gibbons won’t seek re-election to a second term as Governor in two years.

Let the floodgates open…

Las Vegas- Although rumors have been circulating around Gov. Jim Gibbons’ marriage for days, it took an aide commenting on the record to the Reno Gazette-Journal for any of the “legitimate” news sources to begin covering it. The following is an overview of the varied and sometimes vicious coverage of the prospective matrimonial imbroglio so far:

What was the quote that got this all going? Dianne Cornwall, the governor’s chief operating officer, told the Reno Gazette-Journal yesterday that "It is a personal issue with the governor until a decision is made. And I'm not certain that a decision has been made.”
