No one seems to have noticed, but Governor Gibbons did something right this week. Gibbons signed the Nevada Open Government Initiative yesterday, making Nevada the fourth state in the union to have such a program.
He did it by executive order, it only costs $78,000, and they aim it to have it up and running in January with his proposed budget one of the first listings on www.open.nv.gov. The goal is to have as much transparent state spending information on the website as possible by 2010.
That’s all great news, but the timing for Gibbons on this could not be worse. Remember, on Sept. 10, 2001 everyone was talking about the Chandra Levy disappearance. In a blink, those headlines disappeared. This is the first positive press he’s seen in a while, and within hours it will be lost in the medical mess.
One pol suggested that this idea actually came from Sen. Bob Beers. It is a very Beers-like move, but come on. The Governor got one right, and if you really can’t stand him just do a happy dance that no one will notice this glimmer of good management because of the timing.
It’s like trying to whisper something during a tornado. Just doesn’t work.
