Berkley gets call, endorses Obama
By Joseph K. CooperCARSON CITY - U.S. Rep. Shelley Berkley (D-Las Vegas) endorsed her party's presumptive nominee, Ill. Sen. Barack Obama, for the presidency today.
Berkley had previously endorsed N.Y. Sen. Hillary Clinton in January.
"Barack Obama is my choice for President because he brings the hope of a brighter future, and he will deliver the change our nation is craving," said Berkley. "Senator Obama has visited Nevada numerous times and he understands our issues. He is well aware of how the economic slowdown has impacted our state. I know Senator Obama is looking forward to campaigning in Nevada and I look forward to helping him win in Las Vegas and throughout the Silver State this November."
Berkley's endorsement comes somewhat later than most other elected Democrats. When Ill. Sen. Barack Obama clinched the nomination earlier this month, Nevada's other congressional Democrat, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, endorsed within a week.
Last Thursday, Berkley said she was waiting for a telephone call from Obama before she would endorse him. Obama called Berkley this afternoon, according to Berkley campaign manager Renee Aschoff.
Aschoff said Berkley would actively campaign for Obama and would attend any southern Nevada events he holds while congress is not in session.
Although Berkley's endorsement is late, it is better news for Obama than at least one other Democrat's response to the presumed nomination.
U.S. Rep. Dan Boren (D-Okla.) refused to endorse Obama earlier this month.
