Miller challenges Woodbury, others on term limits

LAS VEGAS-Secretary of State Ross Miller's office issued challenges today against the candidacies of Clark County Commissioner Bruce Woodbury, Clark County School District Trustees Mary Beth Scow and Ruth Leola Johnson, Humboldt County School Board member Linda Schrempp and university regents Howard Rosenberg and Thalia Dondero.

The challenges were sent to the registrar of voters in Washoe and Clark Counties and the Humboldt county clerk.  They each include an affidavit by Matt Griffin, deputy secretary of state for elections, that spells out the reason for the challenge, specifically:

"That pursuant to Article 15, Section 3 of the Nevada Constitution, no person may be elected to any state office or local governing body who has served in that office or at the expiration of his current term if he is so serving will have served, 12 years or more, unless the permissible number of terms or duration of service is otherwise specified in this constitution."

These challenges may set the stage for a showdown over the constitutionality of the term-limits amendment passed in 1996.
