Martin campaign plays smoke and mirrors with fundraising numbers

LAS VEGAS- If there's one number that Andrew Martin wants you to know about his congressional campaign, it's that he has $200,000 cash on hand at the end of this first quarter fundraising period.  All the other numbers, his staff would prefer you didn't know.

Martin's campaign sent out a press release today titled "DEMOCRATIC CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATE ANDREW MARTIN FILES FEC REPORT - REPORTS OVER $200,000 CASH ON HAND."

"The residents of Nevada's 3rd Congressional District are tired of the status quo," said Martin spokesperson Vin Gopal in the release.  "They are tired of the Washington D.C. political establishment telling them who they should vote for.  They want change and that is why they are attracted to the Andrew Martin for Congress Campaign.  As more people hear about Andrew's campaign to change Washington DC, they are attracted to it, which is why our support continues to increase every day."

Undoubtedly, Martin has supporters in the 3rd Congressional District, but whatever support they are giving him is not financial.

The $200,000 cash on hand that Martin is reporting is largely the product of yet another huge personal loan to the campaign from Martin.  In this reporting period alone, Martin loaned his campaign $175,000, information that was noticeably absent from his campaign press release.  Taken together with his previous loans to the campaign, Martin has now put nearly $300,000 of personal money into his effort to win the 3rd district Democratic nomination.

Fundraising from sources other than the candidate totaled $30,000, according to a later statement from Gopal.

The press release also played up the support that he has received from within the state of Nevada, claiming that Martin's campaign had "over 100 contributors from Nevada alone."  In previous quarters, as reported by PolitickerNV.com Mar. 21, less than 4 percent of Martin's contributors had been from within Nevada.

The problem with those "over 100 contributors," however, is that nearly all of them, according to Martin finance director Marcus Brandon, contributed less than $200 to the campaign.  Due to federal campaign finance laws that require disclosure of contributors' names, home states and occupations only if they made contributions in excess of $200, the number of in-state contributors will not be independently verifiable.

"We have well over 100 people who have contributed in the state of Nevada to his campaign," Brandon said Wednesday in a call set up by newly minted campaign manager Becky Isas. "You just don't see it because it's not on the itemized reports.  So we're going to put that in the release and we would like for people to report that."

Brandon acknowledged that Martin is putting a lot of money into his own campaign, but wanted to further draw attention to the number of small, unverifiable donors.

After personally asking this reporter to help get the message out, Brandon said "[Martin] has the ability to self-fund the campaign but what we would like to get out is, you know, people keep talking about Nevada contributors."

"If you look at Daskas' report, we'd be comparable to the amount of people.  He might be getting big $2,000 donations from the establishment, but I'll bet you the number of contributors in the state of Nevada is probably very close."

As of the Dec. 31 reporting deadline, Robert Daskas, the other Democrat seeking the 3rd District nod, had received 189 individual contributions in excess of $200 from 149 Nevadans.

In looking over the Daskas

In looking over the Daskas donor list, it looks like an almost exclusive list of rich attorney cronies. Poor Andrew has to deal with the regular Joe. Those are the people whose votes really matter.

I'm leaning towards Martin

I'm leaning towards Martin - He seems more electable than Daskas and he seems crazy enough to spend 1 or 2 million dollars on his own campaign.

Where is Martin's reports? How much does he have on hand and where are his donors coming from?

hmmm

Where are Daskas' reports? Why so much pressure on Martin but no pressure on Daskas? This seems like good journalism.

Kinda hard to compete when

Kinda hard to compete when the nominee seems to be once again handselected by the powers that be i.e. Harry Reid and Shelley Berkeley. I think the Clubs and and the CCCC and NSCC need to remind harry and SHelley about supporting one Democratic nominee over another Democratic nominee.

Let's just get lockstep in place and march boys and girls. After going through all the persons who did not want to want the PTB settled on Daska's a nice likeable photogenic family man who is clueless about the issues. But fear not he is being groomed by the DCCC.

I met Andrew almost a year ago -I was underwhelmed. I saw him recently wow what a difference. Adrew is knowledgeable and has much to offer. I think he can help make a difference in D. C. with all the financial mess we have. Daskas nice, likeable guy who will wander the halls looking to find his way.

Put scrutiny on Daskas why are you nit picking with Martin?

Andrew is a joke. Thats why he is getting treated like a joke.

Electability

Andrew Martin is most certainly not a joke, but his views paint him as somewhat of a small-government libertarian and there is a perennial Libertarian candidate in the race who got 5% of the vote in the last two cycles.
Read his Website. Railing about fraudulent billing for gourment popcorn makes for good stump speech anecdotes, but it is insignificant compared to the 12 Billion per month spent in Iraq.
Once again, review electability. Martin moved here in 2005, is still the president of his condo association in DC and owns businesses in PA and Peru. His roots in Las Vegas are extremely shallow and transient. Voters in this district are notoriously susceptible to the carpetbagger charge even when it is unfounded. And in this case it's actually true.
The complete lack of donor base with most of the campaign funded from his own pocket will go over like a lead balloon, too.

This story is in response to

This story is in response to Martin's press release about his FEC filing March 31. He invited the scrutiny, but maybe did not anticipate the reporter would actually, you know, investigate, not just parrot the claims. Probably a story about Daskas will appear when his FEC report is available.

Accountability?

Well, so Andrew finally fired his previous campaign manager and has hired a new team - then they try to pull the wool over our eyes, right out of the box, with smoke and mirrors - I don't want THAT kind of person, especially an accountant, representing me!

Do yourself, and the rest of the Democratic Party, a favor Andrew - suspend your joke of a campaign and make the max donation to Daskas' campaign!

Then, maybe, just maybe, you'll be forgiven and have a chance of running for office IF you start working with the Democratic Party first - that's the way it works in Nevada, you have to make a positive impression on all the poltical operatives, advocates, activists, club and caucus chairs and members of the County and State Central Committee and the precinct people - you know, the people who actually represent their neighbors and do the work of getting people to the polls on election day?

And in the process Andrew try, NEXT TIME, to not to insult the intelligence of our elected leaders in the Democratic Party!
