Coal foes hope film riles up Nevadans

Environmentalists said it was a sign that a wave of coal plant proposals across the country was finally ebbing when an unlikely coalition of environmentalists, small-town mayors, ranchers and other citizens persuaded a Texas utility company to scrap plans for eight of 11 new coal-fired power plants last year. Supervisors take light criticism, defend records

Incumbent supervisors took light criticism from their opponents and defended their records at their first debate since the primary election.

The forum Wednesday hosted by the League of Women Voters of Nevada including Ward 2 Supervisor Shelly Aldean and challenger Dennis Johnson as well as Ward 4 Supervisor Richard Staub and challenger Molly Walt had few direct exchanges except for one rebuttal from Staub.  (Nevada Appeal, Dave Frank)

Crowell and Haskins keep it friendly

The candidates for Carson City mayor in their first debate since the primary narrowed the field from six to two exchanged compliments, spoke of their friendship and made good-natured jokes about each other.

Number of voters increases in Carson City

There are approximately 1,400 more voters in Carson City this year than there were in 2004, according to state voter registration totals.

Carson City reported a total of 27,783 registered voters while Douglas had 31,587, which is an increase of more than 4,000. (Nevada Appeal, Staff)

Washoe, cities submit bill requests to lawmakers

To end the infighting over taxes and services in unincorporated Washoe County, a Reno bill request for the upcoming session of the Legislature calls for a county vote on imposing a new suburban tax, which could affect up to 107,000 residents who live outside of Reno and Sparks.
