Poll says Yucca not key to voters More Nevadans said a presidential candidate's stance on disposing of nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain would have no impact on their vote than said that it would have a major influence. In a poll of 400 likely Nevada voters Aug. 13-15, 38 percent indicated that the Yucca Mountain issue would not sway their vote for president, while 23 percent said it would. Another 37 percent said it would have some influence. (Review Journal, Keith Rogers) Link: http://www.lvrj.com/news/27425204.html
Obama camp considers Nevada a battleground state DENVER -- Democrats hope to win Nevada in November, but they don't expect to run away with it. Colorado, site of this week's Democratic convention, and Nevada "are both going to be very, very close races," said David Plouffe, campaign manager for the man who will be crowned the party's nominee on Thursday, Barack Obama. "I don't see either (campaign) opening up a big lead there." JOHN L. SMITH: Gibbons' approval rating goes from bad to worse, and more trouble lurks I was shocked, stunned, positively pole-axed by the news printed right here in the pages of the Review-Journal. "Gibbons' numbers beyond compare," the headline throbbed like a Sunday morning hangover above a story citing a Mason-Dixon Polling & Research survey that ranked the performance of Nevada's Jim Gibbons last among six Mountain West governors. (Review Journal, John L. Smith) Link: http://www.lvrj.com/news/27425114.html Denver — On any given day in Congress, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is a popular man. Reporters swarm him, surrounding his small frame and holding recorders high to capture his comments. They walk with him until the last possible moment, stopping only when he steps behind the door to his office or onto the Senate floor, places off-limits to journalists. (Las Vegas Sun, Lisa Mascaro) Link: http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2008/aug/26/reids-role-may-signal-subtle... Denver — An open and passionate man, Timothy E. Guertin is a chief executive with a story to tell, and he came to the Democratic National Convention to share it over dinner with potentially influential friends. He believes his company, which saves lives with cancer-fighting technology, can use its know-how to help with national security. Researchers at his plant in Las Vegas are working on that now. Nevada's Dina Titus is getting credit in The Wall Street Journal for helping shape the Democratic Party's position on additional drilling for oil in the United States. (Gazette Journal, Staff) Link: http://news.rgj.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080825/NEWS18/80825089 DENVER — Day one of the Democratic National Convention and the Nevada delegation has already been the beneficiary of corporate sponsorship. The Campaign Finance Institute estimates $112 million will be spent by corporations and labor unions to host events at the two political conventions this year. (Gazette Journal, Anjeanette Damon) Link: http://news.rgj.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080825/NEWS19/80825084 Reno Mayor Bob Cashell was not dismayed that poll results show that a majority of Washoe County voters opposes a ballot question that would raise taxes to help repair and renovate many older schools in the district. (Gazette Journal, Ray Hagar) Link: http://news.rgj.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080825/NEWS18/80825059 DENVER – Nevada only has five electoral votes. But in what is expected to be a close presidential contest, those five votes could well swing the election. LAS VEGAS-- Nevadans and voters in five other Western states support efforts to curb illegal Mexico-U.S. immigration, but also say they prefer that illegal immigrants already in the country have a chance to apply for legal status rather than be deported, a new regional poll said.
