Reid calls for bipartisan summit on energy

LAS VEGAS — U.S. Sen. Harry Reid says he’s putting all energy solutions up for discussion at an energy summit set to begin today, including one the Nevada senator rarely endorses.

“I’m not opposed to nuclear,” Reid told reporters Friday as he touted the meeting of national energy experts and politicians in Las Vegas. “I just know that in most parts of the country we can’t use it because of the water, it uses so much water.” (Nevada Appeal, AP)

Where the going gets tough (in Reno), Obama gets going

— Sen. Barack Obama met privately with a handful of Nevada’s Democratic leaders Sunday before giving a short speech and answering questions from about 250 labor leaders and union members.

During the private meeting, Assemblywoman Sheila Leslie, an early Obama supporter, jokingly reminded Obama that he won Washoe County by 10 points in January’s Democratic caucus, she said. (Las Vegas Sun, David McGrath Schwartz)

GOP says Obama inexperienced

Lady Luck decides tie elections in Nevada

Voters do not always decide who wins an election. In 1972, Dorothy Wilson was re-elected justice of peace by the flip of a coin.

On election day, incumbent Wilson and Billy Weyer both received 146 votes for the seat on the Gabbs bench. Amazingly, they both received 133 votes in Gabbs and 13 votes each in Ione. (Gazette Journal, Patty Cafferata)

Democrats target two Senate seats

CARSON CITY -- With the preliminary round now out of the way, the serious business of party politics has begun for state lawmakers -- and Democrats are looking for a way to take control of the Senate, where they last held the majority a distant 17 years ago.

A single Republican seat now gives the GOP control of the 21-member upper house of the Legislature, where Majority Leader Bill Raggio, R-Reno, has held sway since 1993. (Review Journal, Sean Whaley)

Democrats’ strategy: Tie every Republican to Gibbons

Assembly Speaker Barbara Buckley’s eyes fairly twinkled and I thought I could hear her salivary glands starting up as she answered the question of whether Democrats planned to tie the Jim Gibbons albatross around the neck of every GOP candidate in the coming 80 days. (Las Vegas Sun, Jon Ralston)

Isn’t it time Iraq started paying for reconstruction? Ensign, others say yes

Not since late last year has the war in Iraq been the top issue on voters’ minds.

In poll after poll, Iraq slips down the list — usually No. 2, but sometimes dropping another rung.

Jobs and the economy have topped voter concerns as the mortgage mess unfolded, unemployment rates soared higher than post-9/11 levels in Nevada, and $4-a-gallon-gas emerged during the summer driving season. (Las Vegas Sun, Lisa Mascaro)

Reid summit in green spotlight
