Hillary Clinton to campaign for Obama in Henderson Friday

U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) will campaign at a Henderson high school Friday on behalf of her former rival, U.S. Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), the Obama camp said Wednesday.

State Sen. Dina Titus, the Democrat hoping to unseat Rep. Jon Porter in the 3rd Congressional District, kept up an aggressive fundraising pace last month but still has less than half of Porter's campaign war chest, according to campaign finance disclosures filed last week with the Federal Election Commission. Candidates invest in high court seat

All four candidates for one Nevada Supreme Court seat have made six-figure loans to their campaigns, according to reports filed with the secretary of state.

The reports from the candidates in the Supreme Court Seat B race include one from former judge Don Chairez who lists his own $135,000 loan to his campaign and no other contributions.

Kris Pickering is at the top of the list both in contributions and personal loans. She has received $556,229 in cash contributions, including $360,000 in her own funds. (Las Vegas Sun, AP)

Carson mayoral candidates go on the attack

Candidates for Carson City mayor criticized each other publicly at a forum Wednesday night, less than a week before the primary election.

Lobbyist and school board member Bob Crowell took the majority of the attacks at the Plaza Hotel in a conference room filled with more than 150 people.

Crowell, who other candidates acknowledged as the front-runner, has raised more money than the other five candidates combined. (Nevada Appeal, Dave Frank)

Prison closure possible by '09 Legislature

Possible closure of the old Nevada State Prison will be on the table at the 2009 Legislature if the Department of Corrections must cut 14 percent out of its upcoming 2009-11 budget, a new report states.

The report on the prison, which dates to the 1860s and is one of the oldest in the West, went to the state Prison Board, which meets Aug. 12. The shutdown would save $19 million a year but would eliminate about 200 jobs in the Carson City area. (Nevada Appeal, AP)

Incumbents defend themselves at forum

function createQString(s) { return escape(s); } function stripHTML(s){ var re= /<\S[^><]*>/g return s.replace(re, "") } var Heading = "Incumbents%20defend%20themselves%20at%20forum"; var strippedHeading = stripHTML(Heading); var tempTitle = createQString(strippedHeading); var ArticleTitle = "&t="+tempTitle;

Incumbent supervisors defended themselves and their decisions against criticism by challengers at a forum Wednesday night, saying the city has acted as responsibly as it could.

Andy Salm, challenger for Ward 4 supervisor, for instance, said “Carson City cannot afford its old spending habits” and that city needs to “rein in redevelopment with taxpayer interest instead of special interest.”

Dennis Johnson, challenger for Ward 2 supervisor, said he’s seen waste such as the V&T Railway “fiasco” and “back room dealings” that made him want to run for office. (Nevada Appeal. Dave Frank)

Celebrate a birthday by voting

Next week, an interesting coincidence will occur in Carson City: The official 150th birthday of Carson City will be Tuesday, Aug. 12, which also happens to be Election Day for the primary — the day voters choose the people they believe are best able to lead the city to prosperity. Final mayoral candidate files campaign contributions

Ken Haskins raised a total of $12,542 to support his bid for Carson City mayor, putting him second in fundraising among the seven candidates seeking to replace Marv Teixeira.

Haskins, pastor at Carson City’s First Christian Church, was the only mayoral candidate whose report wasn’t available at the clerk’s office Tuesday afternoon. He filed his report in time for the Tuesday deadline, but in the wrong place, presenting it at the secretary of state’s office instead of the Carson City clerk/recorder. Senate's Raggio far outraises Angle

CARSON CITY -- Senate Majority Leader Bill Raggio, locked in a tough Reno GOP primary battle with former Assemblywoman Sharron Angle, has reported close to $300,000 in contributions for his re-election bid.

Contributions to Raggio, who is running for what would be his last term in the Senate because of term limits, far exceed those reported by Angle, who has raised nearly $35,000, her campaign report shows. (Review Journal, Sean Whaley)

Renowned scientist takes governor to task

For the second time this year, renowned climate scientist James Hansen has asked Gov. Jim Gibbons to do something meaningful to stop climate change.

This time Hansen wrote to urge Gibbons over recommendations to combat climate change made by a committee the governor appointed. Hansen urged Gibbons to reject a proposal to reduce the "intensity" of Nevada's greenhouse gas emissions, a policy that would allow utilities to build more coal-fired power plants as long as they also built renewables or closed older, polluting power plants.
