Bill seeks to protect land around Carson City

The government would transfer thousands of acres of federal land to Carson City for open space and recreation, and would permanently withdraw another 20,000 acres of federal land near the city from development if federal legislation is approved. (Gazette Journal, Staff)

Democrats paint blue target on Heller's seat 

CARSON CITY -- Democratic congressional candidate Jill Derby figures her chances of defeating Rep. Dean Heller, R-Nev., improved Friday when her race was placed in her party's Red-to-Blue program.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee decided the Heller-Derby 2nd Congressional District rematch will be one of the races it will target in its program to turn red Republican districts to blue Democratic ones. (Review Journal, Ed Vogel)

Report shows increase in Nevada schools with low marks

WASHINGTON -- A mini-revolution erupted on the House floor today when Democrats shut off the lights and adjourned for the August recess -- and Republicans refused to go home.

City lands bill goes to U.S. Senate

Carson City could gain about 6,200 acres of federal land that it would protect from economic development if a bill introduced this week in the U.S. Senate is approved.

The city would trade 2,260 acres of city-owned property in the heights of the Sierra Nevada west of the city for the land. (Nevada Appeal, Staff)

Nevada voter fraud task force formed

LAS VEGAS — A voter fraud task force is looking for election irregularities and instances of questionable voter registration and intimidation in Nevada.

Nevada Secretary of State Ross Miller, state Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto, U.S. Attorney Gregory Brower and FBI Las Vegas Special Agent in Charge Steven Martinez pointed Thursday to projections of a record voter turnout in Nevada in November. (Nevada Appeal, AP)
