LAS VEGAS – Shirley Breeden, director of professional development education for the Clark County School District, will announce “in the next week or two” her candidacy for the 21st Assembly District seat currently held by Republican Assemblyman Bob Beers.
Breeden’s candidacy will add to an already crowded field in the district. Jonathan Ozark, who in 2006 lost an election in the 10th Assembly District, is challenging Beers in a Republican primary, and now there will be a Democratic primary between Breeden and Henderson Democratic Club president Ellen Spiegel.
Breeden has spent more than thirty years with the Clark County School District and plans to focus her campaign on education and public safety.
“I believe that if we can provide extra programs for the kids, that will, in turn, keep them off the street and hopefully out of prison,” said Breeden. “We spend so much money now for those kids who have taken a left turn.”
“I’ve worked with people my entire life and with the school district,” said Breeden. “I’m a human resources person at heart and I’ve worked both licensed and support staff.”
Breeden has also served as a court-appointed special advocate and describes that work as some of her most rewarding.
The 21st District has maintained a slight edge in voter registration for the Republicans, although Democratic registration has risen significantly. As of the most recent statistics, the Republicans have 503 more registered voters with 3,882 voters registered as non-partisan. Last year at this time, the Republican advantage was more than 1,600 voters.
“The last election, when [Beers] won, his opponent lost by a few hundred votes,” said Breeden. “So, I’m going to work hard, get my name out, meet the people and convince them that I will do a very, very fine job.”
She added, “I want to help, I think I can make a difference and be a voice for my constituents.”

Is this the same Shirley
Is this the same Shirley Breeden that sued CCSD a few years back?
NEW BLOOD
IT'S ALWAYS REFRESHING TO SEE NEW FACES RUNNING FOR OFFICE- ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO ARE WILLING TO STEP UP AND FIGHT AGAINST THE BIG POWERFUL SPECIAL INTERESTS. SEEMS TO ME THAT SHE'S ALSO BY FAR THE MOST QUALIFIED OUT OF ALL THE CANDIDATES IN THAT RACE- INCLUDING THE INCUMBENT. SHOULD BE AN INTERESTING RACE.
Yeah - let's sue everybody
Yeah Dolly - I Googled Breeden. Same character who sued CCSD. Sounds to me that when she didn't like her job she sued. Claimed she was upset about a joke she supposedly didn't like or something like that. Of course the joke didn't bother her when she first heard it. It only got to her when she didnt like her job a few years later. Delightful. It was probably her lawyer who told her how upset she was. Another well-qualified candidate.
You got four winners there - two liberals, a "Republican" who loves union card dealers and a GOP kid who is barely out of diapers. Glad I don't live there.
Bob Beers= Crazy Mother
Bob drafted a Bill that would require Nevada Kindergarden teachers to have guns in their classrooms for self defense. That is easily the stupidest, overreaction of an idea I have EVER seen.
Beers is a Dinosaur and he scares the Bejesus out of me.
Let's vote for someone who is not a blowhard looney this fall.
Just a thought.
Hmmm
I must say I'm a little concerned about the other candidates in this district. Is this Ozark guy going to keep moving from district to district until he wins? Bob Beers...no comment necessary because we all know. And Spiegel, so she's a business owner, big deal! Who isn't these days?
you've got to be kidding. I
you've got to be kidding. I don't think 30 years being a Clark County School District Bureaucrat warrants the title 'New Blood'. "Standing up against special interest..."!!! She's a walking special interest with that resume. How's she feel about charter schools?
Different Beers, Zeke.
Different Beers, Zeke. You're thinking of the wacko who ran for governor. This is the one who helped the Wynn dealers unionize. He's a decent guy but apparently lots of folks think he can be beaten. Breeden is Tick Segerbloom's gal (I hear he was her lawyer in the lawsuit that's been mentioned and her daughter works for him). Spiegel has the Henderson city folks behind her. Ozark has the right wing behind him. Should be interesting on both sides.
spot on
Spot on comments, union dude. I'm watching this one now and it's shaping up to big a big, fat mess.
And Zeke, you haven't kicked me in the head over on the opinion pages for weeks now. My feelings are hurt, although my head is finally clearing. We miss you.
Wally
You've gotta be kidding
I heard the news this morning but I didn’t believe it. Oh. My. Gawd. The Democrats have gone off the deep end if they are running Shirley Breeden. I can’t wait to see all the stuff that will come out about her. Let’s remember, seven years ago the US Supreme Court – in a 9-0 vote no less – declared Breeden’s frivolous lawsuit to be something that "no reasonable person could have believed." And I'm told that suit is just the tip of the iceberg – more skeletons will apparently be coming out. The Republicans will have a field day.
